Up In The Air!

At last we hear from 30 Seconds to Mars as their latest album Love Lust Faith + Dreams is set to be released May 21st 2013! The single Up In Th Air was launched into space and broadcasted to their fans here on Earth. It's a powerful and beautiful piece of music that sets off a lot of personal emotion. Some fans are upset about the change in sound while others are happy to hear something fresh. The guys are getting older and eyeliner tends to look strange on a 40 year old man. The sound is amazing and very experimental and the lyrics add the beauty, "I'll wrap my hands around your neck so tight with love, love, love..." Look for the music video to be released soon, I personally cannot wait!

Up In The Air

It's been a while!

Apparently life's busy schedules took over and made me fall very far behind. So let's catch up. Looks like I'm on the right track as far as working for bands in the future. My upcoming internship, senior project, and arts management classes next semester. One step closer! I've made two Facebook pages that are still in the early stages, possibly failing but I'm hoping for the best. The first is Save Your Wrists Listen to Music. It's really a hang out spot that features music, music videos, lyrics, and whatever else people want and it is all based on self injury, mental illness, suicide. But this is not an emo page, I'm not saying self injury is good. I know from experience that when dealing with tough times hearing music that relates to you can help. The songs I pick are generally rock, metal, post hardcore, hardcore, etc... The second page is Amped Alternative which is similar to a Facebook version of this blog.

I've been listening to a lot of Halestorm, Miss May I, and Slipknot. Like non-stop, it's even my study music the louder the better. Trying to find some inspiration for my upcoming senior project, thinking Norwegian Black Metal. Check out Until the Light Takes Us it's on YouTube. Best documentary ever, I watch it over and over again. That or band fan communities. We'll see.

Mayhem Festival is coming! I'll be at the Saratoga show in July. The suspense is killing me, I'm so excited! I've heard many complaints about the lineup and all I can say is, it's the second Mayhem Tour and it's going to be tough to top Slipknot from last summer but I think they chose a good mix of bands for this summer. Some of them I never listen to but they have to cater to everyone's choices so variety is GOOD!

I hope you're all well and hopefully college doesn't get in the way any time soon.

Please Like My Page!

I don't want to sound desperate trust me but my new Facebook page for my second blog Livewire is an easier alternative to that blog. It's easier to update new info on Facebook and I would love to get some "Likes" going. This is part of my future career and I need all the help I can get. Please visit the page and like it and give me bands you want me to include! The link is being a pain so go to Facebook and search for The Livewire Blog. It has a photo of someone at a show giving the rock sign with their hand. Please and thank you guys and girls!

Self Injury and Suicide In Music

Self injury and suicide are not pleasant topics of discussion but they are real and both occur far more often than most people realize. These are some songs that either are about suicide and self injury or can be interpreted in that way. These are purely my opinion you can do with them what you like...

Between the Trees- The Way She Feels

Papa Roach-Scars

Hawthorne Heights- Ohio Is For Lovers

Bayside- How To Fix Everything

Flyleaf- Much Like Falling

Sleeping With Sirens- Iris (Goo Goo Dolls Cover)

In My Coma: Magnets & Miracles

I recently won the new In My Coma album Magnets & Miracles from the band's Facebook page. In the past week I've listened to the album repeatedly. It's incredible and powerful. I love the electronic influences throughout the album, they add something extra to the overall sound. The vocals are smooth and really beautiful for a rock band. Songs like Losing Sleep and Lost show the bands softer side while heavier songs like Friendly Fire show their rock side. Overall it is a very well put together album and I can't stop listening to it. You'll be sure to love In My Coma if you like Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, and Three Days Grace.

A few old favorites...

Believe it or not I haven't always liked post-hardcore and metalcore bands. I had no idea what those genres even were. I was raised on the music given to me by my father and my older sister. They introduced me to bands like Bullet for My Valentine, Disturbed, Evanescence, Atreyu, Mushroomhead and the list goes on. So I figured I would share with you what started it all and to remind you that there's more to music than skinny jeans and screamo fan girls.

Disturbed-Down With The Sickness

Atreyu-Becoming The Bull

Slipknot-Duality

Mushroomhead-Solitaire Unraveling

Some videos for your Thursday night...

As I Lay Dying-Parallels

Memphis May Fire-The Sinner

Bring Me The Horizon-Chelsea Smile

Asking Alexandria-Not The American Average

Upon This Dawning- A New Beginning ft. Chris Motionless

Crown the Empire Pt I and II

If there are any Crown the Empire fans out there they released Part I and II of the extended music video. Part I titled Oh, Catastrophe and Part II The Fallout. Here they are!

Flyleaf New Horizons

I've heard mixed reviews of Flyleaf's newest album New Horizons. First of all Lacey Mosley is no longer the lead singer for a number of reasons. She's married, she recently had a baby, and a close friend died. Lacey left on a good note, welcoming their new singer Kristen May and said farewell to her fans. Many critics are saying that Flyleaf has lost their touch and that they have nothing new to show. When they released the single New Horizons I had all I could do to stop listening. Sure it's different than I'm So Sick but you can only growl into a mic so many times. So this is my opinion of New Horizons. The sound is new but in a good way! They have new and different material that shows they're capable of more than screaming and singing about God. It's fresh with songs like New Horizons but they kept their heavier sound with songs like Call You Out. I love the album because it was a great way to leave off, Lacey is leaving and she has clearly just made her best and last mark on the music world. But the band is more than just Lacey Mosley. There is more to it then just her. Kristen May has big shoes to fill but I think she can handle it. Flyleaf would never steer us wrong. So I recommend New Horizons to every Flyleaf fan out there and every rock, metal, and Christian rock lovers.
Remember to BUY the music! Bands need money too :)
But here's a preview!

Pierce the Veil

The band of the week is Pierce the Veil! This post hardcore band was formed in 2006 in San Diego, California. The band was founded by brothers Vic and Mike Fuentes and soon enough they added Tony Perry and Jaime Preciado to the mix. Pierce the Veil has released 3 studio albums, their latest being Collide with the Sky in 2012 featuring collaborations with Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens, Jason Butler of Letlive, and Lindsey Stamey of Oh No Fiasco. The album truly is phenominal, I believe it is some of their best work and the collaborations were a great addition because having other vocalists accented Vic's vocals very nicely. Some of my favorite songs off of the album are Hell Above, King for a Day (ft. Kellin Quinn), and A Match Into Water. You'll be sure to love Pierce the Veil if you like Sleeping With Sirens, Asking Alexandria, and Broadway.
Support the band!

The album playlist is available for listening on youtube.
Available on itunes and in stores.

Just a thought

Earlier today I was thinking about what I want to be when I grow up. No matter how old I get that question will always be on my mind. Ever since my very first concert, Family Values Tour 2007, I knew my heart and soul was in music. I took up drum lessons for a short time, voice lessons, and high school chorus. My passion however did not lie within my own performance but simply in my love for music in general. I remember my first band obsession because still to this day they are my number one band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. Jared and Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic are all that is left now but I absolutely love them. I've seen their grunge days, their emo days, and their rebirth. People have asked me why I stared liking them in the first place. My honest answer is always, I saw The Kill music video on my cousins Zune in 2006 and from that day on I was a die hard fan. I pre-ordered albums, owned a 30 STM sketchbook, lined paper, folder, notebook, diary, messenger bag, posters, and tee shirts. Later on would come Jared Letos movies including My So Called Life. So how does this tie into my main point? I realized I didn't want to be a performer, that wasn't what I was good at. I was however good at listening, telling others about band I think they'd like, writing about them, going to concerts, taking pictures. This is what made me truly happy. When I first started reading Alternative Press magazine I was skeptical. Most of my life had been focused on bands like Disturbed, Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Lacuna Coil. During my first year of college that changed and I branched out to post-hardcore bands like Mayday Parade and Chiodos. I discovered Alternative Press and once I gave it a chance I feel in love. It had everything I could ever want in a magazine with upcoming bands, album reviews, special editions, and a wide variety of genres. This was a turning point for me because I realized that my dream job was to share music with others. I find so much excitement in sharing an upcoming band with my friends and on this blog. When I go to a concert, I tell everyone I know about it. I was at one point a journalism major but I hated it, it was not something I could see myself doing. I didn't like how formal most places were. I have never wanted to write for the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. I changed my major to media studies because that way I had more ground to cover. People look for media/society majors anyway. I could learn what I wanted to learn. I know how to spell, I have an opinion, and I love music. That's enough. I spoke with an editor for Spin magazine who told me that you don't have to be a journalist to write for a magazine. If you can work hard, meet deadlines, and be creative you'll be fine. My dream has never been to be a big shot and certainly to never be a millionaire. I  would love to live in a tiny cheap apartment, eat ramen for every meal, work long hours, and have low pay because I know that while I'm doing all of this I'll have a job I'm happy to do. I would rather be poor and happy than rich and snobby. So when I grow up I want to be a writer and as long as I have music I'm happy. This is just a thought I was having and write it out and share because I'm sure I'm not the only person who's been in this type of situation. I hope you get a little something out of it.

RIP Underoath

Well sadly we must shed a tear and say goodbye to one of our dear friends. Yes it is true Christian metal core band Underoath is calling it quits after an impressive 15 year run. Many of us were just kids when they started, they've been with all of us through our teen years and beyond. The band is releasing a 1999-2013 Anthology in November. We will never forget you Underoath!

In My Coma: Interview

This is an interview with a band I profiled earlier in September. In My Coma was kind enough to set aside some time before a show for lead singer/guitarist Jasper to answer some questions via email. To give a quick recap of the band, they are a Canadian rock band with both male and female vocals setting it apart from many rock bands. As musicians they are very talented and they put on a great show (what I've seen live online that is) and as people they are just looking to have a good time and have fun. Please visit their facebook to show your support!

http://www.facebook.com/InMyComa

Interview...

1. Who are some of your main influences?

I was born in England, so I grew up listening to Depeche Mode, the Cure, and Oasis. There's a deep-seeded love for British music in me, but I also grew up in the Nirvana whirlwind and so I'm a big fan of bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Queens of the Stone Age. So, our music has become a little bit of all of that! We call it "Briternative."

2. Do you find that you have more Canadian fans or US fans?

We definitely have more Canadian fans right now. We play most of our shows here and some of the radio stations have been good to us. But we do have fans all over the world, including Europe. England is a big one for us as well.

3. If you could play a show at any venue or place in the world where would it be?

Wembley is the dream venue, but hopefully it's sold out when we play there! It wouldn't be much fun to play Wembley if there's no crowd!

4. Are you planning any kind of a tour for the future?

We're planning for anything and everything. We'd love to tour and it will happen at some point. We don't know where or when quite yet, but it's definitely on the table.

5. If you could create a lineup of band to tour with who would you choose?

I would love to tour with a band like Muse or Bush. I think we'd be a good fit with bands like that.

6. Where do you guys see yourselves going in terms of shows, recording, tours?

Forward. The best answer to that question is "forward." It's an unpredictable musical world out there right now, so it's impossible to be prepared for everything. We're going to keep writing, keep playing shows, and keep recording. We're always getting something new out to our fans!

End Interview...

In My Coma- Friendly Fire

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows

The band of the week is D.R.U.G.S. otherwise known as Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows. The band was a brainchild of Craig Owens formerly of the band Chiodos. Owens was in search of something different and he that is exactly what the result was. D.R.U.G.S had more singing compared to Chiodos which fits the stereotype of "screamo". Having this second band gave him the chance to experiment with different sounds and it's that freedom that sets this band apart from Chiodos. Owens maintains his ability to tell stories through his music which is a quality worth having to make a successful album. As many of you know Craig Owens has returned to Chiodos so we may or may not be hearing from D.R.U.G.S any time soon, we'll have to wait and see. You'll like Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows if you like bands such as: Chiodos, Broadway, Sleeping With Sirens, and Pierce The Veil.
