In My Coma: Interview

This is an interview with a band I profiled earlier in September. In My Coma was kind enough to set aside some time before a show for lead singer/guitarist Jasper to answer some questions via email. To give a quick recap of the band, they are a Canadian rock band with both male and female vocals setting it apart from many rock bands. As musicians they are very talented and they put on a great show (what I've seen live online that is) and as people they are just looking to have a good time and have fun. Please visit their facebook to show your support!

Interview...

1. Who are some of your main influences?

I was born in England, so I grew up listening to Depeche Mode, the Cure, and Oasis. There's a deep-seeded love for British music in me, but I also grew up in the Nirvana whirlwind and so I'm a big fan of bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Queens of the Stone Age. So, our music has become a little bit of all of that! We call it "Briternative."

2. Do you find that you have more Canadian fans or US fans?

We definitely have more Canadian fans right now. We play most of our shows here and some of the radio stations have been good to us. But we do have fans all over the world, including Europe. England is a big one for us as well.

3. If you could play a show at any venue or place in the world where would it be?

Wembley is the dream venue, but hopefully it's sold out when we play there! It wouldn't be much fun to play Wembley if there's no crowd!

4. Are you planning any kind of a tour for the future?

We're planning for anything and everything. We'd love to tour and it will happen at some point. We don't know where or when quite yet, but it's definitely on the table.

5. If you could create a lineup of band to tour with who would you choose?

I would love to tour with a band like Muse or Bush. I think we'd be a good fit with bands like that.

6. Where do you guys see yourselves going in terms of shows, recording, tours?

Forward. The best answer to that question is "forward." It's an unpredictable musical world out there right now, so it's impossible to be prepared for everything. We're going to keep writing, keep playing shows, and keep recording. We're always getting something new out to our fans!

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows

The band of the week is D.R.U.G.S. otherwise known as Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows. The band was a brainchild of Craig Owens formerly of the band Chiodos. Owens was in search of something different and he that is exactly what the result was. D.R.U.G.S had more singing compared to Chiodos which fits the stereotype of "screamo". Having this second band gave him the chance to experiment with different sounds and it's that freedom that sets this band apart from Chiodos. Owens maintains his ability to tell stories through his music which is a quality worth having to make a successful album. As many of you know Craig Owens has returned to Chiodos so we may or may not be hearing from D.R.U.G.S any time soon, we'll have to wait and see. You'll like Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows if you like bands such as: Chiodos, Broadway, Sleeping With Sirens, and Pierce The Veil.

The Son of Leeds

I recently was introduced to a little band called The Son of Leeds fresh out of none other than New Jersey the birthplace of so many incredible bands. Well New Jersey, you didn't let us down. This metalcore band packs a lot of sound for someone trying to break the ice of the music world. There are plenty of growls and heavy bass to satisfy even the worst music starvation you may be suffering from. The drums are hard and clear which is something I personally always look for. And of course the guitarist never disappoints. While they're still working on their sound, they're pretty awesome guys (just check out their youtube). I recommend The Son of Leeds to any fans of Devil Wears Prada and Underoath.

Devil Wears Prada

This weeks band of the week is The Devil Wears Prada is a metalcore band out Dayton, Ohio. The band has released four albums under two different labels, the latest being Dead Throne released in 2011. The band is heavy with plenty of growling lyrics and more melodic tones to counteract the heaviness. The Devil Wears Prada is a new addition to my music library and these are some of my favorites...

Right Now Na Na!

I decided to change it up and listen to Spotify again. I had been using Pandora and Youtube but lets face it, they just don't have what it takes to satisfy my music needs. I typed in Black Veil Brides and this incredible playlist appeared with plenty of BVB, Asking Alexandria, and more screamo than you can imagine. I had the playlist on shuffle as after a few tracks I came across something different. I knew it was a cover but I had no idea who the original artist was or the cover artist and certainly not the track name. I looked at my screen and was shocked. It was Akon's Right Now covered by none other than Asking Alexandria. My first thought was traitors! But I realize that all music should be linked together. Every genre influences the next and I salute you Asking Alexandria for covering an Akon song. That takes guts!

In My Coma

A recent find of mine is the result of once again some bored web searching. I came across a Canadian trio by the name of In My Coma. Lead singer and guitarist Jasper James has a clear and strong vocal presence which works in harmony with the rest of the band. Bassist Laura Doll is proof that women belong in rock and finally Mike an incredible drummer with plenty of power coming from behind the kit. This band is just heavy enough to "crunch" in a way and that's something I generally look for in rock. If that element isn't there the song will sometimes, not always lose something and I think most listeners know what I'm talking about. I highly suggest In My Coma to fans of all genres of rock. There sound is similar to Muse, Radiohead, and even some more classic rock elements. Give them a listen, show them your support!

Something on the quiet side: Stuart Newman

Recently I came across an up and coming artist by the name of Stuart Newman. As you all know the music featured on this blog tends to be on the loud side but I'm all for supporting a new artist. Stuart's sound is smooth and mellow with plenty of amazing guitar to give it an edge. I even hear a hint of Johnny Cash, small hint but it's there. This guy is really going places so check him out!

Support new music! Give him a listen!

Sleeping With Sirens: Iris (cover)

Sleeping with Sirens has covered the Goo Goo Dolls hit "Iris". The cover is beautiful and simple. The guys really kept the emotion and power in the song and it's incredible.

Some other Sleeping With Sirens favorites are You Kill Me (In A Good Way), Tally It Up Settle The Score, If You Can't Hang. You'll like Sleeping With Sirens if you like Mayday Parade and Broadway.

Helia!!!

So I guess they aren't exactly "new" music but they are worth a listen! Helia is a post hardcore band out of none other than ITALY! Crazy right?! I stumbled upon their cover of Alejandro by Lady Gaga (*gag*) and its incredible. Replace Gaga with screams, growls, and some smoother cleaner vocals. If you get the chance check out some of their videodiary clips on youtube, these are some funny guys trust me and the accent is sure to bring a smile to your face.
